How can we extend Ultimaker’s user base without people needing to invest time in learning how to model? Ultimaker is a rapidly growing company specializing in the technology of 3D printing. Their mission is to stimulate growth of local digital manufacturing and making it available for a large audience. They do this by creating low cost, easy to use and compact 3D printing solutions for desktop printing. One of the barriers Ultimaker identified is the gap in knowledge in how to design for 3D printing in CAD software; their end user don’t know what to take into account. The result is that Ultimaker is mostly used by the early adopters.

One of the barriers Ultimaker identified is the knowledge gap on “how to Design for 3D printing”. Often their end-users have learned to optimise their design for conventional production methods.

Problem as given:

‘How remove this knowledge barrier, in order to make 3D printing truly accessible option to a much larger group than the early adopters?’
